Our story

For over 20 years, Life Psychology has been a trusted provider of quality mental health care in Southwest Michigan.

Founded by Dr. Harold Smith, the practice began modestly but grew as the demand for evidence-based, patient-centered mental health services increased. In 2012, Life Psychology expanded to a second location on West Ferry Street to better serve the community.

Today, Life Psychology is a thriving practice with two convenient locations in Berrien Springs and Battle Creek. Our team of licensed counselors, social workers, and psychologists offers compassionate, personalized care for individuals, couples, and families, continuing Dr. Smith’s vision of providing accessible, high-quality mental health support.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is counseling right for me?
Counseling is helpful for many people for many different reasons, but it only works if you are ready to commit to the process of change. When you work with a professional, they can help to provide insight, understanding, and a safe environment so that you can process life’s difficulties. When this happens, growth and healing are possible. Therapy is right for anyone who is ready to take initiative and work towards lasting changes for their life.
  • When should I seek counseling?
Counseling services can be helpful at any time. We all have problems and concerns at one point or another and at times, these concerns become too big to handle on our own, and this is normal. Below are some specific times when counseling may be the most helpful: When problems and concerns disrupt your day-to-day activities When there is conflict or instability in your close relationships (work, marriage, significant other, children, parent, etc.) Loss of someone and grief issues Traumatic events Longing for personal growth Identity concerns
  • What does confidentiality mean?
Confidentiality is the backbone of the therapeutic process. This means that all aspects of your participation in therapy are confidential as outlined by federal and state law. These laws apply to such things as scheduling appointments, content disclosed in therapy sessions, and all records and documentation. Your therapist will cover the details of confidentiality, including law mandated limitations in your first therapy session.
