While holidays are often a joyful time of year for many people, for others it can be anything but. It’s not uncommon for the holiday season to trigger stress, loneliness, or a general feeling of emotional overwhelm. If you feel heavy during the holidays, you’re not alone.

There’s nothing wrong with feeling this way. When routines are from travel, events, and seasonal obligations it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and off rhythm. And these disruptions often come with an additional financial strain.

Beyond logistical stress, the holidays also carry a heavy emotional weight and can highlight complicated family dynamics. These unexpected emotional challenges can be difficult to prepare for and even harder to navigate.

For others, the holiday season can bring loneliness and grief into stark contrast. During a time of year where family is typically front and center, the grief of missing past loved ones can be harder to cope with than many anticipate.

The holidays can magnify grief. There is no wrong way or time to grieve. It’s important to reinforce our self-compassion and acknowledge our grief as it occurs or re-emerges. Small rituals like lighting a candle in remembrance or carrying on traditions can help us bring our lost loved ones back into the holiday in a way that honors our grief.

During this time of year, it’s important to prioritize your health and wellbeing. Carving out space in your day or week to check in on yourself and your emotions can help you process better. Consider scheduling time for a short walk or a quiet morning to yourself to give yourself time to give your emotions space and to protect your energy.

Sometimes the emotions dredged up by the holiday can overwhelm us beyond what we feel we can handle alone. In these times it’s essential to reach out to our support systems. Check in with your community—be it friends, family, or anyone else in your life.

It’s understandable to feel down during the holidays. But it’s crucial that we continue to practice self-compassion and to take care of ourselves. If you feel like you could use a little extra support this holiday season, our therapists are here to help you manage whatever you’re experiencing. Call to schedule an appointment today.
