The following is based on Valerie Murray's responses to questions about her background and therapeutic approach.
“I Am Drawn to Helping Others”
When asked why she chose this profession, Valerie shared, “I am drawn to helping others struggling with mental health and find the brain to be an interesting part of the human experience. The brain, while relatively small, can cause so much trouble for people, and I enjoy helping people work through understanding their brain and working together to solve problems.”
A Journey Inspired by Empathy
Valerie’s journey to becoming a therapist began in her teenage years. “When I was a teenager, my mom bought me my first Psychology Today magazine, which I immediately fell in love with – the stories and articles. Later, she gave me the book When Rabbit Howls, which sparked my passion for working as a trauma therapist,” she recalls. This passion led her to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Chinese from Carthage College, followed by a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University.
"I Am Always Learning"
Working with clients continues to shape Valerie’s perspective. “I am always learning with each client I work with. Being a part of life-changing work continues to inspire me each day,” she explains. Her dedication to learning and growth ensures that she brings the latest therapeutic techniques and compassion to every session.
Techniques to Heal
Valerie’s therapeutic approach is rooted in evidence-based methods, including EMDR, CBT, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness. “I am EMDR-trained and trauma-informed. I also utilize CBT, DBT, mindfulness, substance abuse counseling, and ACT,” she shares. This comprehensive approach allows her to tailor her techniques to each client’s unique needs.
A Safe Space for Healing
Valerie is known for creating a warm, compassionate environment where clients feel safe to express themselves. “I am a warm, compassionate person who supports clients at their own pace. When my clients are ready to work through what is uncomfortable, I will be right there, supporting them through each step of the process,” she says. Her empathetic nature and unwavering support help clients feel understood and valued.
"Seeing Clients Find Relief Brings Me Joy"
One of the most rewarding aspects of Valerie’s work is witnessing her clients’ progress. “Seeing clients find relief after overcoming their challenges and hearing them say they can sleep through the night and not suffer from nightmares brings me immense joy,” she shares. Her dedication to her clients’ well-being is at the heart of her practice.
